Safety, Tips & Etiquette

  • Always wear a helmet.

  • It may take some practice to get accustomed to the motor kicking in. Here's some advice, start in a low level of assist and then raise the level as you get going. Be cautious when maneuvering around cars and pedestrians or starting up while turning at the same time.

  • Don’t be a jerk. You are sharing the bike lane with other riders, many of whom will not have ebikes. Don’t zoom up to the front, be patient and pass safely after looking back to make sure you are clear.

  • Warn pedestrians and others that you are passing. Pass on the left and ring your bell or say "On your left." Learn more about the rules of the road from the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.

  • Please join the San Francisco Bike Coalition. Their tireless efforts on behalf of cyclists are largely responsible for our great bike lane network, raising the profile of cyclists in SF and getting cycling included in all sorts of city planning.

  • Park your bike courteously, don’t block the sidewalk, driveways, or doorways. Use an official bike rack, if possible.

  • Lock your bike always, even in a garage. Check out more tips for secure locking.

  • Keep your brakes adjusted, keep air in your tires and lubricate with a dry bike chain lubricant.

  • If your ebike starts performing differently or makes odd or new noises, please bring it to a mechanic.
